"She was just...with the drawers" she said as she made a drawer opening gesture (Funnily enough I thought looking for things in drawers requires me to open them, if someone knows an alternative way please let me know!) "She's got a nasty attitude that one" she continued.
The manager reiterated "I've been here all the time she's done nothing wrong."
"You would side with HER! My husbands not a liar!"
Anyway in the end she wandered off still calling me names and saying that she'd put in a complaint about me.
At this point I who had been completely gobsmacked and hadn't really said anything get I told her to feel free "My name is Stephanie" I said pointing at my badge. Then I went back into the dispensary because I was actually shaking. I manage to keep my composure long enough to tell one of the pharmacists what had happened when the man was in (ie a big pile of bugger all) before I burst into tears (which I am NOT proud of) I was just so completely shocked.

Incidentally it was only last week that a patient had commented on how helpful I was and my tutor has already said that she's gonna sign me off on being polite, helpful and such things at our next meeting. Does that sound like a "nasty piece of work with an attitude problem" to you?

The joys of the counter

Okay so I've been on placement for 2 weeks now. This week has been mad busy and the work is hard. The pharmacy staff are really nice and helpful, which is good because I have a tendency to need a lot of help at the moment. Aside from the amount of clinical knowledge I still need to gain, one of the biggest problems is when customers start asking me where things are. Since it's not my local store I have never shopped there, so I have no idea where the bloody eggs are. Seriously there's so many other staff on the shop floor who will know where to find it, why queue to ask me?

I've found it hard to get to sleep recently, every time I settle down to sleep I see the pharmacy counter with a massive queue and I just can't make my brain switch off. That makes getting up to be in work by 8am that bit more difficult, though surprisingly I think I prefer working earlies to the late shift.

Placement

Well its been a while since my last update. Exams have come and gone and the results are out, I was pleased to see that I had done better than I expected. I'm now back living with my parents in St Helens as I start my first 6 month placement on Monday and I'm excited yet apprehensive. I'm going to have to have a very steep learning curve as I have no previous experience in community pharmacy. I'm also a bit apprehensive of the mountains of paperwork we need to fill in to complete the pre-reg placement. The good bit is that I'll be earning, and that I will get 11 days holiday entitlement according to my tutor. Anyway, on Wednesday I met my tutor and some of the staff I'll be working with and they all seemed friendly.

The thing about living at home is that I'll miss all my friends from Bradford. I'll also miss the archery club and the regular competitions. The person I'll miss most will be Mike, there'll be 242miles (according to theAA.com's route planner) between us. The pressure is greater than ever this year as we need to pass 40 out of 50 credits first time around or our pre-reg training (which commences late Jan/early Feb) will not count. The first exam was yesterday morning and it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated and I'm fairly confident that I have passed that one.

Tomorrow's exam promises to be a bitch as there is no multiple choice or short answer element to it, you have to answer 2 out of 3 essay questions. I suck at writing essays, I can't plan them for toffee, so they end up being disjointed and with an awful lot of forgotten information just added at the end. Also there are no hints or prompts as to what to write and I frequently find myself omitting information which i know but think is not important or particularly relevant and losing marks that way.

Either way by tomorrow I will be happier anyway as only one exam will remain, the one that I have probably revised most for. This exam involves copious amounts of maths, which has a tendency to scare me into revision as maths is definitely not my strong point.

I don't think I've ever put as much effort into revision as I have been doing this time around and its getting me down a bit that this week I'm having to work harder than ever whilst the rest of the student body is starting to relax and enjoy the festivities of the run up to Christmas. I feel decidedly un-Christmas-y I keep trying to get into the spirit but there's just too much pressure.

It'll all be over soon and then I can take a few days to relax before I start revision for the January exams when we get back. The joys of pharmacy!

Thought of the Day
Think positively, success is more attitude rather than aptitude.

First NEUAL match of the season

For those of you who aren't familiar with the acronym NEUAL stands for Northern England Universities Archery League. The University of Bradford Archery Club attended our first match of the 06/07 indoor season on Saturday 25th November. Technically it should have been our 2nd match, but the 1st fell through due to "reasons beyond our control". The turn out on our behalf was poor, with just 4 experienced archers, 1 novice, 1 guest (who is no longer a student and therefore cannot contribute to the team score) and 1 supporter who very kindly volunteered to drive us.

The competition itself was agonising, with 3 people shooting at each target in turn, and a general apathy towards scoring at any speed, it seemed to last forever. This was not helped in the slightest by the fact that I am not currently match fit. I've been having trouble with my back and so standing for long periods only exacerbates my lumbar pain. I've also not been pushing myself enough in practice sessions due to my back pain, I was exhausted after having slept very little for about a fortnight and the sports hall we were in was extremely cold. Three dozen arrows to go and the pain sets in big time, by the time we get to 1 dozen arrows I should have retired through sheer pain and exhaustion. I continued out of stubbornness, no way was I going to to retire and let both the team and myself down this close to the end.

Once the competition had finished and the equipment had been packed away, we went to a local pub for the results to be anounced and to get a meal. Feeling very sorry for myself, I bought food but didn't eat much, I was hurting too much to eat. Unsurprisingly our team came in last, however I was very surprised to learn that I had shot a new personal best at a score of 481 (meaning that I could finally claim a purple badge for achieving a score above 475) as I really didn't feel I was shooting to the best of my ability. I was even more shocked to hear that this score was enough to earn me second place in my category of Ladies Experience Recurve. I couldn't believe it, especially when I was so close to withdrawing near the end! So Ladies and Gentlemen, big me up for perseverance and just a little bit of skill. =)

Archery Equipment

Its been a while since I last posted. I feel the need to tell you all about my shiny new bow. I actually bought it nearly a month ago, but was going to wait until I had some better pictures before I posted about it but then never got round to the photography bit.

The riser (handle) is one of the last of its kind (THE last to be sold at Aardvark Archery) as the manufacturer has stopped producing them now, god knows why as it is a very popular model. Anyway, it feels really nice to shoot especially compared to my old wooden club bow, which there's a fair chance someone else is using now.

Of course buying a bow also meant buying arrows too. I got mocked at this point for my choice in colour for my fletches (flights) as most people tend to have 3 fletches in 2 different colours, the odd one marking the fletch that faces away from the bow when the arrow is on the string. I however, chose to have 3 different colours, mainly as it makes me less likely to meet people with the same arrows in a competition, something that has happened a few times whilst I was using club equipment. In the end I chose hot pink, purple and blue.

Nothing's Ever Simple

I went for an eye test at Specsavers 2 weeks ago on saturday. Since I needed new glasses and they had a 2 for 1 offer on I decided to get some sunglasses too, I had to ask 3 times before any of the assistants would show me any sunglasses frames rather than telling me to just get tinted lenses in ordinary frames. I had to wait 1 entire week before my glasses were ready to be picked up, a far cry from the 1 hr service I usually get in my branch at home. Shortly after geting home I realise that they have not put on the anti-glare coating that I paid an extra £30 for so take them back when I next get chance, the following Saturday. They are now re-making my glasses which will not be ready until this wednesday so I am currently using an old pair that actually hurt my eyes, which was the reason for visiting in the first place. To top that I was not even issued with my prescription on the day of my eye test, I had to ask for it on my 3rd visit.

I've never had any problems with the St Helens Branch which always seems fairly efficient, maybe I should just wait and go there in future.

The other thing that is irritating me is the current lack of lighting in my room. The fluorescent light began constantly flickering on and off on friday night. I reported it the next day, after my archery session of course (incidently my new bow is great but that's for another time). After giving the details of the nature and location of the fault, the coversation went something like this:
Reception guy "it's not an emergency so it might not get done today"
Me "but it'll get done over the weekend, right?"
Reception guy "hopefully, but it might not be fixed till monday"
Me "okay thanks"
*I wander off muttering obscenities under my breath about "might not be done till monday" more than likely meaning "WON'T be done till monday"*
It's Sunday night/early monday morning now and I'm still waiting.

Where's my £20?

Today we had to officially re-register for the pharmacy course, which meant that we all had to traipse up to M floor of the Richmond building at 10am and wait in a packed corridor to be let in 2 by 2. The point of this little exercise was to check our details were up to date (which incidentally they could have done without my presence by checking SAINT, the main university records) and to extract £20 from each student. I was less than satisfied with what I got in return for my hard earned cash which was infact this crappy booklet.
The £20 is meant to pay for practical schedules and lecture notes and such, which we may or may not receive over time. I just feel that I have been cheated out of my money as I have nothing to show for it and, afterall, aren't our tuition fees supposed to pay for this kind of thing.

To correct my earlier whinges about my halls of residence, they are by no means as bad as I thought they would be, I quite like my room even if the walls are kinda thin. My only issue is that they have stopped providing toilet roll so you have to buy your own and look a bit special as you try to hide your handful of tissue as you head to the bathroom. However this would still affect me even if I had got into my first choice of halls, apparently only the private halls and the halls on Laisteridge Lane get the privilage of toilet roll these days but they have to pay at least £10 extra a week for it.

Ikea: Scandinavian for Hell hole

I went to Ikea today to replace the things that got lost and broken in my previous years at Uni. It's a nightmare of a shop! Firstly there's the fact that you have to walk bloody miles around their silly grey path that weaves about everywhere so you end up walking at least twice as far as you need to. Secondly if you, as I had done, have looked through the catalogue and decided what you want then good luck finding it. It's not even as if you can ask the staff were to find it because once you have finally managed to locate one (though finding rocking horse poo would be an easier task) you can't even ask them where to find the item because the Scandinavian names are seemingly unpronounceable. If ever you do find the range of products you pre-selected you find that there is an entire range of almost identical products bearing the name you scribbled down with very little to tell you which is the reasonably priced product you desire and which product is the one that the costs 3 times more than the item is worth. If by some miracle it is clear which product is which, I found it was only because those "bargain bowls" are only suitable for use by a family of pixies they're so small.

Once you have found, and identified your items you only have a further 3 miles to find a checkout (and an exit for that matter I'd hate to be there in the event of a fire) where half the staff at the are pretending that their tills are closing. Once find someone who is serving and join a queue you always happen to be behind a customer that spends 3 hours finding their purse in their handbag and deciding which credit card to pay with, followed by an agonising 2 hours while they try to remember their PIN with a grotesque self satisfied grin when they eventually remember it as though you're meant to give them a round of applause for the finale. You're just wondering whether to give up, put your stuff back and go home empty handed when it's finally your turn. The cashier scans your items, you pay with the correct money (some of us realise that checkouts require payment and have already totalled up how much we have spent and prelocated our payment) then you realise that they don't even give you a damn carrier bag so you just have to prey you dont drop your stuff on the way back to the car.

I'm baffled as to why some people appear to be so fond of this shopping hell!

Sour Grapes

Apparently I am to be living in Kirkstone Halls something I was never happy about, and there are apparently NO spaces to move me into different halls. Some would argue that this is my own fault as my application was handed in about a week after the deadline. I however believe it wasn't entirely my own fault, since I would have handed in my form months earlier had I not been waiting on other people to make the inevitable decision to move into halls. You see we hoped that if we handed in our forms together we would be houses in the same flat or block in halls of residence. It turns out that since our application was late Kirkstone was the only place available for us. This I accepted I didn't like the situation much, but at least we'd all be in it together.

It now comes to light that both parties are now bailing on me, one is filling a place that another friend has given up in favour of private halls, the other is planning on moving into a friends house. I however am now trapped in my contract for a place that I utterly dispise on my own. I guess I am kinda jealous that they have people round them to help them out of the situation. Mostly I'm just disappointed and kinda upset that they've left me on my own, when I waited for them in the first place when they were stalling. I guess it'll teach me to think of others, apparently they don't reciprocate the favour! Thanks a lot.

Whinge over.

On a lighter note I had fun at Martin Mere on Monday we saw and feed lots of ducks and geese and even played in the adventure playground. =P We then went back to Stefs house for food and watched "Chicken Run" followed by "Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave".

Boredom

Sitting on your arse all summer really makes you appreciate having a job.
